Born in Brooklyn in 1934, di Prima is an important writer of the Beat movement. She is the author of 42 books of poetry and prose, including Pieces of a Song, and, most recently, a memoir called Recollections of My Life as a Woman. She recently received the Fred Cody Award for Lifetime Achievement.
