Sea Bee Shanty Crew

During the golden age of shantying, 1840–1860, the work songs of sailors were used aboard ship to help lift spirits and coordinate shipboard jobs, from raising sails and anchors, to turning the capstan and manning the ship’s pumps. California-based shanties describe the dangers of rounding Cape Horn, cruel ship officers, the joys and curses of drink and hopes for riches during the Gold Rush. The Sea Bee Shanty Crew continues this tradition today, and can be heard regularly throughout the Bay Area.
