Jack Kerouac described San Francisco poetess Lenore Kandel as “a big Rumanian goddess,” but she was also an unsung hero of the Beat movement. Kandel’s pamphlet of four erotic love poems, The Love Book, was seized by police at City Lights in the ’60s for violating obscenity codes, thus ensuring her place in history. Tonight North Atlantic Books presents readings from a new (and never-before published) collection of Kandel poems, Collected Poems of Lenore Kandel, which was transcribed by Quiet Lightning founder Evan Karp.
