During this luncheon, attendees will hear bestselling author Paul Theroux hold forth on his new book, Deep South: Four Seasons on Back Roads, as well as his impressions of Harper Lee’s Maycomb, Alabama, where he entrenched himself one spring. We all have our stereotypes about this area of the country, but Theroux, with his writer’s eye, delved deeply into both the geography and history of the southern states, and emerged with a new understanding and compassion for the “profoundly troubled region.” To call Theroux a travel writer is to shortchange the literary virtue and the insights he lends to any locale he visits. Admission includes a sumptuous and intimate lunch and hardback copy of Deep South.
