Lynn Freed—Considering the Essay

Litquake is thrilled to welcome literary icon Lynn Freed, master of the essay. Of her most recent collection, last year’s The Romance of Elsewhere, critic Phillip Lopate wrote, “No one writes funnier, more acutely observant, frank and intelligent personal essays than Lynn Freed.” Bustle added: "If Joan Didion and Fran Lebowitz had a literary love child… the resulting book would be Lynn Freed’s essay collection.” With so few essay collections appearing in print, why pursue the essay as a literary artform? The reasons are myriad, but perhaps the most important among them have to do with honing your writing skills: developing a writing voice, thinking critically, and learning to offer fresh insights into common complaints.
